One of our favorite things about being located in the beautiful town of Ridgefield, CT, is that we are visited by so many hiking, biking, and walking groups! This hiking group came by Sunday after spending some time exploring Bennett’s Pond State Park. They said that most of their hikes are planned based on where to grab a beer afterwards - which many of us at Nod Hill certainly relate to.

There are too many great hikes in the area to name them all, but here are some of our staff’s favorites:

Introducing a crowd favorite: Steve Cueva, our Sales Manager of the Fairfield, New Haven, Essex, & New London counties.

Steve started slinging beers at Nod Hill back in the Spring of ‘23. He was drawn to the brewery because of the sense of community & the welcoming and supportive energy of our owner, Dave, as well as the rest of the crew. In February 2024, he got the opportunity to transition from serving to representing the brewery on the road as our Sales Manager.

“Being able to introduce people to our beers and telling the story behind Nod Hill to those who may have not heard of us is definitely the best part of the job.”

Steve grew up in Ridgefield, so being able to rep some hometown pride has continuously been a bonus in this role.

His favorite Nod Hill beer is the one waiting for him at the taproom after a long day on the road - and that beer has always been Beam, our tried and true house German pilsner.

We truly 🫶🏻 Steve and all he does for our brewery. Say hi to Steve when you see him!

A quick reminder of our Biergarten policies…our staff is not the “rule police” by choice, but they will enforce them when necessary!

👶Children must remain under your supervision at all times. Please keep them within arms reach of you. Just like at a restaurant, the expectation is that your children will stay with you at your table.
🙅No ball-throwing anywhere within the Biergarten, in the entrance area outside the fence, or in the parking lot.
🦮Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times [Taproom=service dogs only]
🚫Outside alcohol is not permitted.
🥪You may bring your own food...but we suggest patronizing our awesome food truck(s)!
🍻Tables in the Biergarten are always first-come, first served. No reservations or holding spots for an extended period.

We had some beautiful weather for our “Where the Gold At” maibock release party for @newsylumbrewingco and @nodhillbrewery yesterday. Thank you all for coming out to support, we will always take an excuse to connect with our brewery friends and this “Beirstacheln” event was a great time!

(“Bierstacheln” is a traditional German technique where you plunge a hot “Stachel” (metal rod) into a cold beer to caramelize the residual malt sugars and create a warm, creamy, toasted marshmallow-like head on the beer. Quite delicious.)

We had some beautiful weather for our “Where the Gold At” maibock release party for @newsylumbrewingco and @nodhillbrewery yesterday. Thank you all for coming out to support, we will always take an excuse to connect with our brewery friends and this “Beirstacheln” event was a great time!

Nod Hill Brewery received an award at the NERAX Cask Festival @neraxcaskfestivals in Boston this weekend - a one-off batch of Geobunny (conditioned on locally-grown Buddha’s hand and vanilla beans) took gold in the American Cask Beer IPA Category!

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, usually presents these prestigious awards at the Great British Beer Fest in London. Although that event was canceled this year, we will continue our involvement in meaningful events like these which blend ideas across the pond (US and the UK).

We also strive to keep the tradition of cask ales ever flowing in our taproom - come by any time and see what’s on cask!

The makings of a grodziskie.

Part 1 - The Nod Hill team took a trip up to Thrall Family Malt @thrallfamilymalt to meet up with Spencer Thrall for a tour of CT’s first modern malt house and to pick up some high-quaility locally-grown wheat for this project.

Part 2 - We made our way over to Hindsight BBQ in Waterbury to drop off the grains. Sampled beers, ate some amazing bbq, met some ducks, and hung out with the Hindsight pit masters while they smoked the grains.

Part 3 - Back at the brewery, we mashed in the smoked malt and our buds from Hindsight came by to assist with the brew. After the boil, we ran it into our coolship and let the wort rest for a couple of hours — a unique process historically used for cooling lagers — then fermented with a German Kölsch yeast.

Part 4 - The beer fermented for about 4 weeks, and then finally this week it was kegged and canned. We cracked open some cans to enjoy over at Hindsight, with friends and paired with some incredible food from their menu.

Retrospekt comes in at a super sessionable 3.5%, with a firm bitterness and light herbal tea-like notes from Perle and Tettnang. The smoke stays pretty restrained, but still carries a distinct depth from the BBQ pits. This unique beer has clean oak and light campfire notes, with a crisp, dry finish and really bright, almost sparkling carbonation. There’s a little fresh grain character up front which snaps off quick with pleasant hoppy bitterness.

Our 100% citra-hopped, heavily-oated pale ale. Pithy citrus, ripe peach, and a smooth, silky mouthfeel.

St Paddy’s just ended - and we just KNOW you’re all wondering the same thing…..

Look, we’ve been wondering too. But don’t worry, we have secured the gold & we are ready to share it with you. (I mean, just look at that 3rd slide😮‍💨)

We have just kegged our Newsylum x Nod Hill Brewery collab beer, a German Maibock with a honey-like gold caramelization. And it’s called 𝕎𝕙𝕖𝕣𝕖 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝔾𝕠𝕝𝕕 𝔸𝕥 .

Newsylum will be hosting a release party on Sunday 3/29 at 1pm - and you’re all invited, so stop in!

This will be a “”Bierstacheln”” event outside around a bonfire - we’ll be poking beers with a hot “”Stachel”” which caramelizes residual malt sugars and instantly creates a warm, creamy, toasted marshmallow-like head on the beer (last slide for reference). Bierstacheln is a traditional technique dating back to at least the 16th century in parts of Germany. It involves heating a metal rod until it’s red-hot and then briefly plunging it into a stein of beer.

It’s particularly associated with springtime celebrations like Maifest, where seasonal beers like Maibocks & Dopplebocks are enjoyed.

So come by and hang out - there might even be some special collab mugs available for purchase.👀
